63-Year-Old Rex Heuermann Charged with Second-Degree Murder

Former Manhattan Architect Faces New Charges

Long Island Serial Killings Suspect Makes Court Appearance

Rex Heuermann, a 60-year-old former architect from Manhattan, has been formally charged with second-degree murder in connection with the Gilgo Beach serial killings on Long Island. Heuermann was arrested on May 24, 2024, and made his initial court appearance the following day.

According to the Suffolk County Police Department, Heuermann is now charged with four counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of Valerie Mack, Megan Waterman, Amber Lynn Costello, and Melissa Barthelemy. These women were among the 10 victims whose bodies were discovered along the Gilgo Beach shoreline between 2010 and 2011.

Heuermann's arrest comes after a lengthy investigation by the Suffolk County Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Investigators have been working to identify the victims and the person responsible for their deaths for over a decade.

The property where Heuermann was arrested is currently estimated to be worth around $635,000, according to the real estate website Zillow. Heuermann reportedly purchased the property in 2012, one year after the last victim's body was discovered.

Heuermann is scheduled to return to court on June 14, 2024, for a preliminary hearing. He is currently being held without bail at the Suffolk County Correctional Facility.
